Stuck for a little gift for Christmas? We have some lovely craft and jewellery options at Grangetown’s Winter Market on Saturday 2nd December (St Patrick’s school carpark, off Havelock Place, 11am-3pm). Martin Avery will be bringing his own range of designs – and can also do be-spoke commissions.
Q How long have you had your business?
I’ve been a silversmith, hand making and selling jewellery, for about a year
Q Tell us a bit about yourself and how your business has developed?
After I retired from teaching photography I wanted to do something else creative as well as continue earning a living and remembered doing some basic silversmith-ing in my early 20s. I thought I would retrain myself in that direction.
I built and kitted out a small workshop and am now selling my work online and at a few creative and arts markets. I am developing a range of my own designs and also welcome commissions from people who want something particular and unique made for them.
Q What will you be selling at the market – what would you recommend?
I make rings, earrings, bracelets and pendants using sterling silver and sometimes semi-precious stones. I will have quite a range to choose from to buy on the day for Christmas presents or a little self-indulgence.
Also with rings featuring semi-precious stones people can order their size and the stone of their choice, e.g. birthstone, usually to be completed within a week.
Q Market goers have told us that Grangetown World Market has made them more likely to shop locally. Is shopping locally or with independents important?
I think its good to encourage individual products and makers, (and locally sourced foods), for quality as well as originality and to support the local economy.
Q Do you sell your products online/elsewhere, if so, where can we find them?
I have a Facebook ‘shop’ Martin Avery Silverworks shop where I have photographs, prices and details of some of my jewellery designs.
My upcoming website will be Silverworks.net but that’s not available just yet – under construction!
